CrossFit is a training methodology.
HYROX is a sport.
CrossFit is the perfect training program for HYROX. It doesn’t have to be CrossFit vs HYROX. It should be CrossFit and HYROX. The key is to think of CrossFit as a broad-based fitness education and HYROX as a specific test. Both are intense, effective, and fun, but they serve different purposes.
Here’s how they compare and why they work so well together.
CrossFit: Fitness Across 10 Domains
CrossFit develops capacity across 10 general physical skills:
- Cardiovascular/respiratory endurance
- Stamina
- Strength
- Flexibility
- Power
- Speed
- Coordination
- Agility
- Accuracy
- Balance
These domains are trained through constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity, which we do in all of our group classes.

HYROX: A Measurable Test of Fitness
HYROX is typically seen as competition first and a training program second. Each race is structured the same way:
• 1 km run
• 1 workout station (repeated 8 times total) which we explained here.
It primarily tests three domains: endurance, stamina, and strength. The events are fixed, but that doesn’t make them easy. Think of it like a decathlon—it’s defined, but challenging.
What About the Skills?
We do see a difference in CrossFit vs HYROX here. CrossFit trains both organic and neurological skills.
- Organic (trainable): Endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility
- Neurological (learned): Coordination, agility, accuracy, balance
- Hybrid (both): Speed and power
HYROX focuses mostly on organic skills: cardio, stamina, and strength. That’s why it’s such a great entry point for people who love to grind—but it can also be a springboard to the broader athletic development found in CrossFit.
Why We Blend Both at Commonwealth CrossFit
For us it’s not CrossFit vs HYROX but CrossFit and/or HYROX. We offer both CrossFit and HYROX-style group training classes, and they complement each other beautifully.
- CrossFit athletes use HYROX-style workouts to extend their metcon endurance and apply their strength in longer time domains.
- HYROX athletes benefit from higher-quality coaching and programming than they’d get in typical bootcamp-style classes—and many eventually transition to CrossFit group training classes to keep progressing.

Why CrossFit is the Best Way to Train for HYROX
You can only get so good at pushing a sled by… pushing a sled.
But to crush HYROX, you need:
- Strength from squats, deadlifts, and presses
- Pulling power from rows, pull-ups, and carries
- Explosive hips and balance for lunges and burpees
- Grip strength for farmers carries
- Flexibility and coordination for wall balls and transitions
In short: to get better at HYROX, get better at CrossFit.
