Train for HYROX at Commonwealth CrossFit

What Is HYROX? And Why is HYROX at Commonwealth CrossFit?

If you’ve been in the gym lately, you may have heard us mention something called HYROX. Maybe you’ve noticed more sled pushes or extra emphasis on wall balls, rowing, or SkiErg intervals. You’re not imagining things—we’re starting to blend HYROX-style training into our programming. And yes, that means HYROX at Commonwealth CrossFit is officially here!

What is HYROX?

HYROX is a global fitness race designed to test your endurance, strength, and mental grit. Think of it as the sport of fitness racing. Each race follows the same format. 8 rounds of 1 km run followed by one of the following workout stations:

  1. SkiErg
  2. Sled Push
  3. Sled Pull
  4. Burpee Broad Jumps
  5. Rowing
  6. Farmers Carry
  7. Sandbag Lunges
  8. Wall Balls

Yes—it’s a challenge. But just like CrossFit, every movement can be scaled and trained over time. That’s one reason we’re excited to introduce HYROX at Commonwealth CrossFit—because it gives every member, no matter their level, a new way to grow and challenge themselves.

Why We’re Introducing HYROX at Commonwealth CrossFit

About 18 months ago, I started noticing HYROX popping up in some of the European gyms I follow. At first, it was just curiosity. But the more I looked into it, the more excited I got. HYROX felt familiar in all the right ways—fun, measurable, inclusive, and competitive (if you want it to be).

It reminded me of how CrossFit felt when I first started: a new challenge that inspired me to push myself, connect with a bigger community, and chase a new level of fitness. And here’s the best part: HYROX fits naturally into what we already do.

In fact, we’ve been training many of these movements in our regular workouts for years. Now, with HYROX at Commonwealth CrossFit, we’re just being more intentional about how we program them.

Will HYROX Replace CrossFit?

Not at all. CrossFit is the foundation of everything we do here. HYROX is simply another expression of that foundation.

In CrossFit’s own pyramid of fitness, the top level is “sport”—and that’s exactly where HYROX fits in.

Think of it this way: CrossFit is how we train. HYROX is one of the ways we test it.

What to Expect

We’re now officially a HYROX-affiliated gym, and over the next few months, you’ll start seeing dedicated HYROX classes added to the schedule.

You can expect:

  • HYROX-focused Sunday and Thursday classes with specific memberships
  • Info sessions and workshops
  • HYROX-specific content on our blog and social channels
  • No additional membership cost for CrossFit members—just more variety!

We’re targeting the 2026 Boston HYROX race—giving us time to build something sustainable, fun, and inclusive for everyone who wants to join in. But we are also proud to see at least 18 members have signed up for HYROX Boston 2025 and will be training with HYROX at Commonwealth CrossFit

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to “train for a race” to benefit from HYROX workouts. Like everything we do at Commonwealth CrossFit, our goal is to help you get fitter, stronger, and more confident—with tools that keep things exciting and purposeful.

HYROX at Commonwealth CrossFit adds variety, intention, and an optional goal to work toward. Whether you’re in it for the challenge or the community, we’re excited to take this next step together.

See you in class.
